A group for CSE students @ UOM ?

Posted by roushdat on April 29, 2008

I was facebooking some minutes ago, and I found that someone quite popular at UOM has added some unitech 2008 pictures on his profile. For those who were fortunate enough to miss that event, it was a job-fair and for those who actually went there, you will agree about this (in case you do not, fine :p)

Well, I was about to put some comments about what i really thought about the Unitech 2008, when i saw some comments already sitting there, all praising it…strange :-S

The ISS club which promotes IT culture at UOM DOES NOT accept any member in its executive committee unless he/she is an Information System (IS) full-time student. And I wish to seize the opportunity here to remind people, that we have 2 main IT-related courses at UOM, one if Information Systems (IS) and the other is Computer Science and Engineering (CSE). The funny thing is that student from CSE course, considered more technical are not allowed in the executive committee of the ISS. So, do we need a CSE Society too?

And if this group is formed, make sure that it is not named after any spatial station…so confusing at times u know :p

Orange juice @ UOM

Posted by roushdat on April 17, 2008

We received invitations to the famous z-orange conference via facebook , I quote

Orange on Campus

L’ Université de Maurice
et
Mauritius Telecom

Surprise Gifts to students !!!
Resfreshment will be served

Basant Lallah
Vice President SU

And indeed it was a well-kept secret, even the Student Union vice-president wasn’t aware about it and I overheard him asking what the surprises would be minutes before the conference was about to start :p And am pretty sure he got a blank answer…because the surprise for the audience was that there was no surprise gift at all :p No simcards…not even t-shirts!

The conference attracted some university students (mostly because of those surprise gifts…), some lecturers and many many z-orange and M.Telecom guyz…(according to some confidential source: 18 french, 30 expatriates). And more than a dozen cameramen and journalists. At one point in time, we had to look at the backs of the photographs while they stand just in front of those speaking.

The University’s vice-chancellor tried to make a good impression upon the zorange people (we will know why soon) with his french…well well…Monsieur Fagoune, as the zorange vice-president lovingly referred to him as buttering his guests :p

After the vice-chancellor, the zorange vice-president started his lengthy (more commercial than technical) speech during which he exposed the good intentions of the company, how it pursue two goals: making money and also caring for the society (but we all know that caring for society, is simply long-term money-making, else these companies just don’t care about society whatsoever ). While Mr Bernard the vice-president was speaking, one of our lecturer (responsible for delivering Computer Networking lectures) was jotting down keywords, underlining, boldifying and linking words to derive a Question! He started the question planning well before the conference began and had already briefed us about the strategy he would adopt.

And came the “donation-ceremony”:(now we know why the vice chancellor was buttering zorange) zorange donated R2million to UOM for scholarships and lab equipment (hey it’s for our computer labs???). But I wonder how this money will really be spent…Our vice-chancellor honestly thanked Bernard, and asked him rather directly for more money next time he come :p (yeah…indeed our financial situation is such…and the vice-chancellor even mentioned about “levé de fonds”. Ladies and gentlemen, if you see young boys and girls standing with tin-cans asking for donation , please donate…)

Soon during question time, we had our default UOM-Question-Asker firing his first salvo:Mainly about whether Zorange will do same as it did with other universities to UOM , helping in bringing forward new courses. After taking the longest possible route for an answer…well, we were merely told what we already know: zorange has started with a donation of R2million to UOM….Nothing else promised…

The second shot was fired by our well-prepared and motivated lecturer, determined to show zorange who is the Boss here! He asked how zorange is thinking about managing the tensions generated by trying to reach the different objectives of that company through integral branding. Well it seemed that either the zorange vice president’s french is poor or he just did not want to answer the question. As for the french problem, the question was translated to english for him but in vain :( maybe spanish next time?

By the way…did any among you know that the University of Mauritius is the best university worldwide? (i was totally ignorant until some french guy said so…)

One thing on the mind of most mauritians right now… the taste of this ‘z’orange. (as for refreshments, the conference organizers left us with an empty stomach : a piece of ‘maspin’ and a small ceres juice).

Yep, still alive…u bet :p

Posted by roushdat on April 14, 2008

Been through a marathon race (still am) lately…with tests, torrential rain, now submission of assignments…But yeahhh am still alive :p

Work can kill u? Opinions differ, but lack of food kills definitely :(

And hearing about those incoming increases in price of rice and wheat, we can be sure that periods of hardship are already knocking at out doors and threatening to burst in anytime now.

Personally i don’t mind eating patate and manioc (cassava and sweet potato). For those who don’t like them, well learn to like them buddy , its gud for u, at least u will survive ;)

Like it or not, i feel that it’s some kind of blessing for mauritius these imported stuff are becoming more and more expensive: at least people will think about producing their own food (something that we used to do and forgot). As from June, i’ll start cultivating manioc. Am also looking for Jack fruit and bread fruit trees (pied zak et fruit a pain). If you guyz have a few of them as small plants, you can send them over :p

Electricity cost is also going up. I’ll start charging my mobile phone’s battery at the university now :p And those with laptops, get urself spare batteries and take them along when you visit relatives…you can charge them for free ;)

Ok guyz, just bare with this blog for some more time until the real stuffs are published ;) Cheerz

Privacy & Technology : co-existence possible?

Posted by roushdat on March 29, 2008

Can someone have a private life today? I doubt it. Will it be possible in the future? No…Do we need privacy? depends on your way of life… i personally don’t need; do you?

As new technologies come into play…i think we can say bye to our privacy.

Curious as i am…i feel it will be nice to know more about others :p

More mistakes in religious festivals’ date?

Posted by roushdat on March 18, 2008

Pandit Mahesh Shastri, who was kind enough to share his knowledge about the Mahashivratree celebration date in mauritius, claims that it is now that the real date miscalculations will pop in.
Here’s what he says:

Pandit Mahesh Shastri Says:
March 18, 2008 at 10:47 am eNow that is bad. He shouldn’t be doing that. I have some questions about how that organization works though…

Soneone was kind enough to mail me list of festivals annouced by sanatan dharma society. I do find some errors in some festivals: Here they are:

2008 Mauritius public calendar

7 Apr Ougadi. Wrong…. rediculous This date should be April 6th, Chaitra padyami doesn’t prevail at the sunrise of mauritius on 7th (Some parts of india like bombay, and delhi will celebrate on 6th April, Where as Tamilnadu, orrisa, bengal, Bihar will celebrate on 7th Apr).

14 April Ram Navami Ramanavami should be April 13th as per shaivite principle or smartha principle, April 14th as per true vaishnavite principle.

15 August Krishna Janmashtami Wrong…. rediculous This should be 23rd August 2008 (This falls on August 24th for India, 23rd for Mauritius)

4 Sep Ganesh Chathurthi. WRONG rediculous. This should be September 3rd in Mauritius (Even India Doesn’t celebrate on 4th September)

I would really like to know their reasoning about adjusting their festivals. When they can celebrate Mahashivaratri on right date why not other fesivals?

elooooooooo :p

Posted by roushdat on March 14, 2008

Just to let everybody know that am still alive, so is my blog ;) Now being over-overloaded with the writing of my project report and tests have been scheduled for the last week of march. As for the project report, deadline for submission is 14th april 2008 (may God help us all meet that deadline)

And one big advice to all those doing final year project:

Backup Everything about your project, daily…(even hourly if u are the paranoid type :p) And dont backup on ur pc itself, put on pendrive, send to ur mailbox, burn cds, dvds…I prefer the last two, so that in case a virus starts an invasion, its effect will be greatly attenuated.

ok, i got to resume with the report now, c u all ;)

Songs with a meaning…meaningless…discriminatory meaning!

Posted by roushdat on March 1, 2008

Woke up this morning, the future president was tired as hell after having spent the night dreaming about an escape through a dense forest, full of “goyaves de chine”, from some soldiers armed with guns. But I had to time to eat loads of those red fruits while being on the run and i also remember to have told myself that i’m having loads of vitamin C these days (really i am :p) … I wonder who may be after me like that, even during my sleep :(

Anyways, hellooooooooooooo everybody! I was thinking what I could put on the blog today when a song track pulled itself up on my playlist. Well I really enjoy that song but the weird thing is that i dont understand a single word in it!

I have quite a few of those kind of songs, in russian, arabic, farsi, polish and the list goes on…Although i try hard to find their lyrics’ translations…most of the time I dont get them and my job becomes much harder when I don’t even know the songs’ titles.

Most of the time, the songs are in other languages for a good reason: These songs are dedicated to a local population in their local language :p (just like our ’sega’)

But then, some people find using songs with parts of different foreign languages nice… These days we find this quite a lot in movies from India. They used have songs in hindi, then a mixture of english. But when most of them started to understand english, they are now adding arabic words. And that’s not all, they are now using farsi as well (Bore Bore from bluffmaster is in farsi, by Arash).

And I’m among those who enjoy songs which I dont know the meaning…and that’s DANGEROUS!  At times the meaning are so contradictory to your own values…and some songs are satanical in nature, others promote drugs and according to some people, hidden messages that your conscious mind cannot understand, you subconscious can! And when it does, then you are in danger…

Use of another language is not the only way of hidding the meaning, Mackmasking is another one. It involves the recording of a sound backwards.

You can read more about these on wikipedia:  Sublimal Message

until then, have a nice weekend ;) And to all those going to Grand Bassin, “bon courage!” and have a safe walk.
