Naming cyclones

Posted by roushdat on February 28, 2007

Mauritius is now all over again, the sunny, heavenly, paradise island it used to be before the cyclone. There are still some places being cleaned up but overall, Mauritius is up and kicking!
Take a look at one of the cleaning teams at the Universtity of Mauritius below.

This scenery was freezed by my classmate Ravi.

One thing I wanted to tell you today is about the names of cyclones

Ok, did I ever tell you that I have psychic powers? If I tell you that the next cyclone that will be formed in our region will have as name: Indlada , you say what?
I still remember a friend talking about the names and many people seems to ignore about their origin, who name the cyclones etc…Some may think it’s just done randomly or byt the meteorological station at Vacoas, Mauritius…or Mr Sok….

Well, actually, it’s rather more complicated than this.Cyclones/Storms are named by the countries in whose region they have been formed. But that’s not all, cyclones can be renamed in some cases; for example a cyclone in the region of Australia will be named by that country, but if it happens (and it does happen at times) that the cyclone travels west in the indian ocean, it will be given another name by African Countries which includes Mauritius. And the list of cyclone names are already establish for 3-4 cyclonic periods at at time, for instance, one can already know the next cyclones name without having devine powers ;)
Here’s the list for this cyclonic period and for the next year adopted by the World Meteorological Organisation for the South-West Indian Ocean:
CYCLONE SEASON 2006/2007
ANITA (Madagascar)
BONDO (Malawi)
CLOVIS (Mauritius)
DORA (Mozambique)
ENOK (Namibia)
FAVIO (Seychelles)
GAMEDE (South Africa)
HUMBA (Tanzania)
INDLALA (Swaziland)
JAYA (Zimbabwe)
KATSE (Botswana)
LISEBO (Lesotho)
MAGOMA (Comoros)
NEWA (Tanzania)
OLIPA (Malawi)
PANDA (Namibia)
QUINCE (Mauritius)
RABECA (Mozambique)
SHYRA (Seychelles)
TSHOLO (South Africa)
UNOKUBI (Swaziland)
VUYANE (Lesotho)
WARURA (Zimbabwe)
XYLO (Madagascar)
YONE (Botswana)
ZOULEHA (Comoros)

CYCLONE SEASON 2007/2008

ARIEL (Mauritius)
BONGWE (Malawi)
CELINA (Mozambique)
DAMA (Namibia)
ELNUS (Seychelles)
FAME (South Africa)
GULA (Swaziland)
HONDO (Zimbabwe)
IVAN (Tanzania)
JOKWE (Botswana)
KAMBA (Comoros)
LOLA (Madagascar)
MARABE (Lesotho)
NUNGU (Malawi)
OFELIA (Mauritius)
PULANE (Lesotho)
QOLI (South Africa)
ROSSANA (Mozambique)
SAMA (Namibia)
TUMA (Swaziland)
UZALE (Comoros)
VONGAI (Zimbabwe)
WARONA (Botswana)
XINA (Seychelles)
YAMBA (Tanzania)
ZEFA (Madagascar)

Note that the country next to a cyclone’s name is the one who proposed it.

I heard another friend saying that the meaning of these names always implies something bad….I don’t think so :S Maybe am wrong…Does anyone no more about the meaning of those names?
Next cyclonic period, the first cyclone will have as name Ariel, which is a nice name huh? Named by Mauritius after all, got to be nice !

With this, I think I can close this cyclonic topic,at least for the time being, until we get Indlala :p

Gamede still affecting life!

Posted by roushdat on February 27, 2007

I expected that the cyclone’s effect would have fade away by today but I was wrong :S The legacy of Gamede still prevails!

It’s still raining torentially at times…Winds are still strong, though not as during the cyclone but strong!!!

Today was supposed to be a normal day at the university for me, starting at 8:30am till 3pm…But I reached home at noon itself due to the effects of Gamede partly.

Our computer lab was not operational today. Reason: Cyclone Gamede has caused water to enter the sockets (network or electrical, i don’t know). I just read a hand-written notice glued on the door saying that the lab is closed due to water presence in the sockets.

In the afternoon, had a class with a lecturer, who happens to be graduating to become a doctor today so lecture cancelled again…

I’ll keep this post short for now due to continuous requests from readers who find lengthy posts tough to read :p Cheerz

Gamede – The aftermath @ uom

Posted by roushdat on February 26, 2007

Greetingz everybody… Enjoyed the longer-than-usual weekend? I did :p I was out of power from saturday 5pm till sunday 10 am, but I used that time to revise a bit and of course, I slept a lot :D 8:30 pm till 8:30 am on the night of saturday to sunday!

Today, rather normal day for most of us except some “lucky” ones from the primary and secondary schools…But personally, I prefered resuming my daily life, fed up of that gamede ;)

Of course, I didn’t forget to bring along my camera to snap a few souvenir pictures of Gamede @ uom…(In some way or another, I was praying to see some nice , I won’t say destruction, but rather some out of the norm scenery).

It was now 7:35am and I reached Reduit…(what I was doing there so early, that’s another story in itself). The moment I approached the Auditorium, I knew that i would be served with what I wanted :D Saw a tree branch in the parking area…
So the souvenir-snapping adventure began :p While taking out my camera, I was joined by my friend Ravi with his white, Grand Bassin pilgrims- Style cap…(maybe he’s still on pilgrimmage…who knows :s ). He walked towards me…and only when he spoke that I recognised him, else I would have considered him as a Grand Bassin pilgrim who lost his way home :D

So let’s get going with the pics now ;) Here they are, a 2-pic compilation of several more pics. To have larger sizes, and a wider variety of them, just click on guyz!

Saturday-Still class 3!

Posted by roushdat on February 24, 2007

Cyclone morning to all people in Mauritius. I’m writing this entry, don’t know if i’ll be able to complete it or not. Reason: Power failures every now and then.

Winds are stronger than ever, but not much rain though. Fortunately there is not much destruction at least in my region and I hope it’s the same for other areas of Mauritius. I’ve got 2 pics right now; one showing a coconut branch on the gate of my neighbour and the other, a banana tree on the ground.

bananatree

Power is going off for approximately 1-minute periods every half hour. Fortunately my UPS is here to compensate and also, I had modified a cable so as to be able to get power for my myT livebox from the UPS itself. Thus these 1-min power failure is not causing much problems.

For the time being, I still have electricity running.(Hope it’s gonna be the case through the whole cyclonic period)

Anyway, if power is still on, I’ll post more entries today…special Gamede ;)

what a wonderful life :p

Posted by roushdat on February 22, 2007

Pretty nice weather; windy, rainy and sunny ;) Greetingz!

Last night I charged my cam batteries for the unitech pics and of course, I planned for shooting some hilarious scenes over there :p hmm but unfortunately, it seems that you will have to wait tomorrow :S…Actually what happened is that I went to a Flash tutorial session after-which I had to rush to the bus stop, else I would have got to wait for about one more hour :p

Some of you already know…others might be wondering why am always having these bus problem.Let’s put things straight: I live in a damned isolated village called L’Escalier. It’s located in the south south east of Mauritius and It’s some 20mins from the airport, on the way to Souillac.

The name itself sounds weird huh? From what I’ve heard so far, there was someone known as “Le compte de L’Escalier” living over here a long time back. I’ve also heard some people saying that L’Escalier comes from the fact that the road just before entering the village is quite bumpy, up-down-up thus the word L’Escalier (Stairs in english).

Anyway, as main industry here, we got a tissue paper factory, 2 clothing factories, 1 sugar mill which is now also a thermal power station producing electricity all year round known as CTSav…And what’s more surprising is that since this power station started operation, the village suffers greatly from power failures…In the future, we should use alternative sources of power, and that’s where the future president Roushdat comes in :p

Among the alternative sources of power, we’ve got on the top list: Nuclear energy, which I’m sure my friend, the Iranian President won’t mind sharing the technology with us.

We also have the sun :p Why not putting solar panels everywhere…on your roof, on your car, in public gardens (as decoration), on your clothes too! No Joke, some people are already working on such projects! Like for example, your mobile phone, laptops etc, can be powered from built-in solar panels on your clothing designed to capture sunlight while your on the move ! Check it out here

And the Sea,waves, tides etc? We’re an island , don’t forget! So we should make maximum use of the resource we’ve been gifted, I’m sure this gonna be very beneficial in the future.

The future…we got to think about! Not for us, but our children. Petroleum product cost is increasing and reserved may soon come to an end, so it’s now the time to think about alternatives!

Let’s come back to the Flash presentation

Well, It was a nice one. For those who are unaware, Flash is a software used to make computer animations and is vector-based. Some guyz at the university who are quite well versed in this software delivered to us a live demo showing us the steps for some basics. There were three of them, among whom, one’s volume was so low, that the back seaters couldn’t hear anything :p Another one, had some problem locating a few keys on the laptop, it was a mac :p Clearly this guy is a pc user just like me ;) And they made an on the spot discovery with the mac keyboard too: The “{” curly bracket was nowhere to be found :p Seems the mac people haven’t deem it important to make that { visible…Anyway, am sure that there must be some shortcut somewhere… “ALT”+” (” maybe?

And here’s a pic of two of the guyz.

I tried so hard

Posted by roushdat on February 21, 2007

Good evening people…Very rainy today, windy too :p Oh yeah, my mum used the mixer some hours earlier, I got the pics in the cam, I’ll upload it tonight. As for the cake…You will get only the pictures :p (Sorry Ravi, next time maybe you’ll get the real thing)

mixer-mum's gift

Well…the dough is still yellow, cause it’s only butter and sugar…no flour added yet.

Here’s the cake for which the mixer helped:

choc cake

Please note that the decoration part was not done by me :p It was my sister :p
UNITECH ! Heard about? Well it’s the UOM’s version of the annual infotech.

I must admit, it was quite well organised…Though there are some funny things too :p Tomorrow I’ll bring you some nice pictures from there.

Something is wrong today, I’m having a mix-up of ideas but I just can’t blog them well :S ..It’s strange that there are things, the more effort we put in, the further away you get, the worse you become, the more you lose. In our thirst for improvement, we unfortunately drift away (or are drifted away?) But how’s that possible? Aren’t we supposed to become better with practice? Am not gud at maths but I think it got something to do with proportional inversity…
In the end it doesn’t even matter…

Thinking what to write…

Posted by roushdat on February 20, 2007

Greetingz people! (at least i’ve written 2 words, let’s continue now)

But hey, i’ve written much more than 2 words huh ? It’s amazing that even when you don’t know what to say, yet you got things to say and most of us very often find ourselves in such situation where either you want to talk but you got nothing to talk about or you don’t want to talk, yet you are talking loads!

In the second case, I’m pretty sure though that you will talk rubbish although I refrain myself from undervaluing these non realistically bright talks :p You know what, many things present in our daily life today is the fruit of some rubbish talks by someone who may not have been cared about by others except those who have got an excellent vision ( the third eye if you wish).

Want an example? Here we go: Some time back, you may have seen small children playing with various objects, sticking them to their ears and talking as if on the phone. (It’s rare today cause parents give their kids mobile phone toys). Looking at these children, you might have enjoyed a good laugh right? But mind you, that’s how the phone adventure began! Some people might have been playing around and found that sound could be transmitted through a medium over some distance.

firstphone

Of course, that was a bit far from Alexander Graham Bell’s Telephone which transmitted sound electrically. Nevertheless, the phone-idea grew from the quite simple, childish act which we’ve seen our children do so many times and at which we’ve laughed at.

So I guess you’ve got a small idea about the importance of someone speaking rubbish now :p Next time you hear someone, just don’t turn your ears away, listen, he/she may have the idea of the century, who knows….Instead, add up to the creative act and enjoy yourself moulding the future, our future! ;)

Guess what, I really didn’t know what to write in this post but i’ve made it, thanks to all rubbish speakers :p

Keep on talking rubbish, and the world will benefit !
