A color quiz

Posted by roushdat on August 30, 2007

I took a quick color quiz today when i happened to stumble on that page. Well, the quiz does not have any question whatsoever, you just have to click on a set of colours in order of preference. And some nice result is generated for you.

As for my result, surprisingly, i give it a 50-60% accuracy. Hmm maybe that these accurate things are just common aspects of everybody’s life coined together to give the impression that the quiz did the job… Try it, and let us know what you people think about it…

With patience bearing everything…

Posted by roushdat on August 29, 2007

Hellooo everybody, feels as if I’ve been away for soooo long. Well, that’s year 3, hopefully my final year for the BSc CSE course.

Despite all the encouragement received from friends who were in year 3 previously, about the fact that the final year is lighter than the 2nd year…I just can’t see that happening :S

Is that because I have an additional module (maths) ? Maybe…But the fact is, the stress involved this year is much more heavy than the workload itself. So those who can manage stress better will definitely see their final year as light. Nevertheless,  I’m not a hopeless case yet; I will rather describe myself as a realistic but pessimistically inclined guy who give significant attention to worst case scenarios and that’s why i feel that my final year gonna be a hot one, but bearable.

In situations like these, a good quality needed is definitely patience. Not only for those who get stressed, but also those people who are in touch with stressed people. And it so happen that I get small bursts of anger at people out there from time to time. All i need is a little bit of understanding from you guyz, for one doesn’t know better what someone else is currently going through than he, himself.

Philosophy of life

Posted by roushdat on August 25, 2007

On the first day, God created the dog and said: “Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. For this, I will give you a life span of twenty years.”

The dog said: “That’s a long time to be barking. How about only ten years and I’ll give you back the other ten?”

So God agreed.

On the second day, God created the monkey and said: “Entertain people, do tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I’ll give you a twenty-year life span.”

The monkey said: “Monkey tricks for twenty years? That’s a pretty long time to perform. How about I give you back ten like the dog did?”

And God agreed.

On the third day, God created the cow and said:”You must go into the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer’s family For this, I will give you a life span of sixty Years.”

The cow said: “That’s kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years. How about twenty and I’ll give back the other forty?”

And God agreed again.

On the fourth day, God created man and said: “Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life. For this, I’ll give you twenty years.”

But man said: “Only twenty years? Could you possibly give me my twenty, the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten the dog gave back; that makes eighty, okay?”

“Okay,” said God, “You asked for it.”

So that i s why for our first twenty years we eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves. For the next forty years we slave in the sun to support our family. For the next ten years we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren. And for the last ten years we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone.

Life has now been explained to you.

Online games, wonderful way of enjoying your free time

Posted by roushdat on August 23, 2007

Over are the days when you have to consider yourself lucky to get someone to play a board game with you.

A decent internet connection is all it takes for you to play your favorite board, word, card… games.

The advantage being that at any time, you are sure to have great opponents up to your challenge. Some time back, a friend introduced me to GameDesire, one of the best online gaming sites, which is also free!

Among my favorites there; Dice, wordcap and battleship. The others are also nice, up to you to try them out ;) logo.jpg Go to www.gamedesire.com

There was another site where I used to play monopoly…but unfortunately monopoly has been removed from there. Other games are available thought, check http://games.atari.com/index.php

Already 2 days of uni..

Posted by roushdat on August 21, 2007

Already 2 days of my final year for my CSE course over. And thank god, I managed to attend 3 lectures today itself. As for yesterday, out of the 2 lectures scheduled, my balance remained zero :p In one case, the lecturer was still on vacation, and the other…I was busy listening to Prof Fagoonee trying desperately to defend the measures taken by the administration. But it’s also true that “zot la main emba roche”…It’s all about politics…

As for today,2 out of the three lectures were delivered in lecture theatres. I had no problem to read the slides. No problem hearing the lecturer as well.

Oh yeah, I entered a maths lecture for the 3rd consecutive year…Hmm not proud of myself :( But, what can i do, i really fear maths. For the first year, I managed to get sick on the day i was supposed to sit for the maths paper. The second year, I dropped maths during the second semester as I had already worked badly again in the tests…and was heading straight to hell with that trend (so many modules for 2nd year :S…1 more will overflow my glass of blood).

And now, final year, final chance to face my fear of maths :p Here i am,“believe you me!”

I’m currently looking for a second hand book for networking that is used for the CSE core computer network module to buy.  Potential sellers, let me know. my mob num is 7603012

Where is the chancellor of UOM ???

Posted by roushdat on August 19, 2007

I find it strange, nobody speaks about the chancellor of the University of Mauritius. These days, with the university’s problems, one name is present in almost all uom-related problems; Prof I.Fagoonee, Vice-chancellor of the university. So, if the vice-chancellor does all the job, what does the chancellor do?

For quite a long time, there was no chancellor at uom, until recently.

Who is the chancellor of UOM?

His name is: Sir Ramesh Jeewoolall. He is the former speaker of the national assembly and took office as UOM’s chancellor on 22 February 2006.

What’s his job as chancellor?

I really don’t know…but I do know that he is being paid a huge sum of money every month. Someone who knows his salary, please let us know ;) I think it is important to know how much we pay someone and what’s his job specially during this period where UOM is undergoing so much financial difficulties…

I guess,Prof I.Fagoonee can add the chancellor on his list of cost reduction, it will prove beneficial for the university!

Hmm by the way, what’s the salary of the vice-chancellor? Can’t we apply cost reduction to it as well? A few thousands less will surely contribute in solving uom’s financial problem ;)

Note: At the time of publishing this post, the website of the University of Mauritius located at http://www.uom.ac.mu is down. Seems they are reducing power cost by shutting down the webserver on sundays….

A small story but a great thought

Posted by roushdat on August 16, 2007

Once upon a time there was a rich King who had four wives.

He loved the 4th wife the most and adorned her with rich robes and treated her to the finest of
delicacies. He gave her nothing but the best.

He also loved the 3rd wife very much and was always showing her off to neighboring kingdoms.
However, he feared that one day she would leave him for another.

He also loved his 2nd wife. She was his confidant and was always kind, considerate and patient with
him. Whenever the King faced a problem, he could confide in her, and she would help him get through the
difficult times.

The King’s 1st wife was a very loyal partner and had made great contributions in maintaining his
wealth and kingdom. However, he did not love the first wife. Although she loved him deeply,
he hardly took notice of her !

One day, the King fell ill and he knew his time was short. He thought of his luxurious life and
wondered, “I now have four wives with me, but when I die, I’ll be all alone.”

Thus, he asked the 4th wife, “I have loved you the most, endowed you with the finest clothing and
showered great care over you. Now that I’m dying, will you follow me and keep me company?”
“No way!”, replied the 4th wife, and she walked away without another word. Her answer cut like a
sharp knife right into his heart.

The sad King then asked the 3rd wife, “I have loved you all my life. Now that I’m dying,
will you follow me and keep me company?” “No!”, replied the 3rd wife. “Life is too good!
When you die, I’m going to remarry!”

His heart sank and turned cold.

He then asked the 2nd wife, “I have always turned to you for help and you’ve always been there for me.
When I die, will you follow me and keep me company?”

“I’m sorry, I can’t help you out this time!”, replied the 2nd wife. “At the very most, I can only walk with you to your grave” Her answer struck him like a bolt of lightning, and the King was devastated.

Then a voice called out: “I’ll go with you. I’ll follow you no matter where you go.”

The King looked up, and there was his first wife. She was very skinny as she suffered from malnutrition and neglect.  Greatly grieved, the King said, “I should have taken  much better care of you when I had the chance!”

In truth, we all have the 4 wives in our lives:

Our 4th wife is our body. No matter how much time and effort we lavish in  making it look good,
it will leave us when we die.

Our 3rd wife is our possessions, status and wealth. When we die, it wil l all go to others.

Our 2nd wife is our family and friends. No matter how much they have been there for us, the furthest
they can stay by us is up to the grave.

And our 1st wife is our Soul.  Often neglected in pursuit of wealth, power and pleasures of the world.
However, our Soul is the only thing that will follow us wherever we go.

Cultivate, strengthen and cherish it now, for it is the only part of us that will follow us to the
throne of God and continue with us throughout Eternity.

Our final year project ;)

Posted by roushdat on August 15, 2007

Greetingz everybody! As most of you must be aware by now, final year projects for IS and CSE students have been allocated. click here for the list.

As for my project partner, Suhaila and I, we’ve been allocated the following project:
Project title:
Learning and Predicting tool for financial markets behaviour.

Project objectives:
Nowadays, Web 2.0 enables us to pull services together from different sites to re-organize and present data in a novel way. The web provides us with enormous amount of information, for example financial news is freely available from Yahoo, Bloomberg, Reuters News Services and many more. The project’s aim is to perform automated sentiment analysis with respect to the behaviour of financial markets and this type of service is significant for people who work and play with the markets. Using the technologies available from Web 2.0, you need to build a plugin that learns and predicts the ‘mood’ of financial markets. This is an exciting project which will enhance your knowledge in recent development in web 2.0, information extraction, information visualization and time series analysis.

Required skills:

Knowledge of programming, web technologies, good analytical skills
It’s going to be under the supervision of Miss B.Durgahee.

We have not met with our supervisor yet, we intend to do that soon and start working on that wonderful project.
In the meantime, all comments and advice about our project are very welcome ;)

The Oracle has spoken: No classes on Monday 13

Posted by roushdat on August 13, 2007

On this Monday, almost all students in Mauritius were back at school, colleges, universities etc… That wasn’t the case for the CSE department of the university of mauritius. Since one week now, a blinking message has been published on the department’s website informing all students that classes will resume on Monday 20 instead of 13 for all CSE and IS students.

Well, 1 more week holidays, that’s gud news u will tell huh? But soon that excitement faded away as i focused more deeply into that one additional holiday week. WHY??? Why have we been given that week? C’mon they don’t love us so much, do they?

Lately the department has been going through some ‘not so smooth’ period with more than expected re-seats, additional classes being created, students not so happy, limited resources…well you know…all the hurdles of a “of the youngest departments of the Faculty of Engineering” (quoted from its website).

And guess what…some computer-minded guyz from have come up with a solution to all the troubles: Why not use our Oracle?!!! It’s been a little more than a year since the department got Oracle running for practicles by students mostly doing the Database Systems modules. But at most, some students have been running some simple sql codes to manipulate simple tables and records…That’s where our brilliant people come in, maximising the use of the Oracle by using it’s bleeding edge capability to advise on decisions!

Needless to say, resumption of courses is such a major event that it can be done only and only if the mighty Oracle give the green light. From a computer terminal in Phase II, one of the most respected priest from the temple of computers logged into the Oracle chamber and keyed in a complex sql. Oracle would not respond….so he tried again, oracle now seems quite annoyed as is spitting red text (the most feared, oracle blood of wrath). After hours of supplication, the priest finally got a reply: if classes are to resume on Monday 13th, this university year will be catastrophic for the cse department and so is any other day within that week. The Oracle has spoken, doomed will be those who go against!

Well well, that was just me fantasizing  about the additional week of holiday. But the oracle is real, trust me ;)

Hello again everybody :p

Posted by roushdat on August 9, 2007

Been sometime didn’t hear from me, right ? Anyway, as usual, am glad to be back, writing for u guyz. Supposedly it should have been me enjoying my last week of well-deserved holidays, guess what…I’ve got an additional week of holidays as bonus from the UOM’s CSE department ;) All CSE and IS students will have classes resuming on the 20 instead of 13!

Seems god accepted my prayers; i needed some more days to watch all the series of stargate i got (thx to vicks :p). So, as you may have guessed, am spending most of my time watching stargate (11 dvds). I’ve completed 4 of them till now.

I’m still waiting to know what final year project I’ve been allocated at university. This is done quite randomly at UOM, you submit a list of a minimum of 10 projects that lecturers are proposing, then you get one of them, according to your luck. It does not really matter how much you like a project or want to work in whatever specific area, it’s all about luck! So, you may end up with a project that u’ve put on the 10th position, and worst, many are not even allocated projects and have to resubmit a new list…

As for electives, fortunately I’ve got the first 2 I wanted, that is real-time systems and computer vision. I feel this final year gonna be hot ;)   Are we readyyyyyyyyyyyyyy????
