Image Enhancement :p

Posted by roushdat on September 30, 2007

Well, I’m currently following a very interesting module lectured by a very capable lecturer. This module is known as Computer Vision (CV for short).

We have started with some basic image enhancement techniques like the negative,threshold and gray level slicing.

Here’s a sample for a picture that I’ve put through the process

:miam.jpg

The original image can be found here , and that was the first recorded pizza hut delivery on UOM’s campus (to my knowledge).

As for the image above, I applied a threshold and the algorithm is given below:

int thrval=120;
for (i=0; i<height; i++)
for (j=0; j<width; j++){
if(matrix[i][j]>=thrval)
matrix[i][j] = 255;
else
matrix[i][j] = 0;
}

As for gray-level slicing, here it is

int i, j;
int t1=150;
int t2=255;

for (i=0; i<height; i++)
for (j=0; j<width; j++){
if((t1<=matrix[i][j])&&(matrix[i][j]<=t2)){
matrix[i][j] = 255;
}
}
The techniques are still basics for now, but we hope to learn more advanced ones soon ;) In the meantime, if you are not so related to codes, just go and download The GIMP , it’s free and simple to use!

friendlies of another time

Posted by roushdat on September 26, 2007

My warm greetings dear people. Sure the Internet has changed the way we make friends (let’s not talk about love here, ok). Today an Internet surfer has  hundreds of friends while compared with someone living some 10 to 15 years back, when let alone those social networking sites like Hi5, FaceBook, Bebo, Orkut…’le doigt fini, compter rester’ (we run out of fingers counting), even the Internet was not as accessible as it is today (But I wonder whether we should be thankful, that’s yet another debatable topic). So that Internetless fellow would be having only dozens of friends instead of the hundreds…

So the question I ask myself, is it really worth having those hundreds of friends when compared to the dozens? Well, I’m sure it is worth thinking about it; researchers have proven that in both situation, the number of ‘core’ friends is likely to be the same and and surprisingly even for the Internet-fellow, his real-friends will most likely be those whom he meets regularly in real life! And it has also been found that those hundreds of virtual friends are very easily forgotten and more often than not, they cannot be trusted!

And now, even for real-life friends they can let you down when you need them, you think your virtual friends will come to your rescue? Forget it :p We are born alone (except for the twins), so alone we shall be, and put thy trust in God, nobody else.

A secret to overcome difficult times

Posted by roushdat on September 23, 2007

Well, as from now on, it is not a secret anymore simply because I’m revealing it to you, my dear people.

Oh by the way, good evening/morning…and hope you are all doing well, not too stressed and fully energized ;)

So what’s it all about huh…while meditating about my final year for the BSc Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Mauritius, how tough it is already, how much tougher it will get and so on…you know the normal stress-thoughts… All of a sudden, a word came to my mind, and I knew; that’s it!!! All my worries for this final year has vanished, and everything has started to seem much much lighter.

What is that word?

FUN !

The trick is simply to fool oneself into believing that all the difficult times are fun!

You have lots of work to do? Hey this is fun!

You got so much to study? That’s also fun ;)

Do you have to spend the night working on assignments to meet deadlines? Wow, damn fun ya :p

Take everything as a challenge and think of the suffering as fun!

In the end, you will end up being addicted to all the tough work out there and get thirsty for more. But be sure to keep this habit of having fun under check, for it can be bad for your health over an extended period of time. (Can lead to cardio-vascular related problems as well as mental imbalance). But let’s say that for a one year period, it is pretty safe. (So all final year students out there, have fun! Studies are fun!)

Have fun everybody ;)

We go multi-lingual.Nós vamos multi-lingual . نذهب متعددة اللغات

Posted by roushdat on September 21, 2007

Ok, to begin, choose the language you understand best:

Note that these translation links have been added on this blog’s left-sidebar, so feel free to use them. Since some time now we have among us readers from France, Portugal and several other countries where English is not the primary language. I saw a friend using these translation links (hello e-tech ) yesterday for his website, and I thought why not for my readers as well….? This improvement also goes in hand with our strategy to gain a global reach. If you think readers from your country speaking another language will be interested with this blog, let know, I will add it if possible ;)

So here we are, easy links for you to get this blog in several languages, but unfortunately, google translation is far from being perfect, you will have to bear with it, and probably have some fun reading the weird translated text :p

Moments away from getting suspended, conductor receives the presidential pardon!

Posted by roushdat on September 18, 2007

By God’s grace, upon mum’s request, I have forgiven him if and only if his plea from forgiveness was a sincere one.

Well, last night itself when I returned from prayers, the conductor was standing outside my house, waiting. Mum didn’t open the door as the keys was with me.Through the window he was giving his own modified versions of what happened. At that time, the police was already looking for him to warn him about the complaint against him (or his brother more specifically…I’ll come to this part soon)

I asked him to get inside and have a seat. The battle could begin! I calmly asked him what happened? To which he immediately switched to the defensive and started to deny that he used an abusive language and that it was me inventing stuffs, hearing things that weren’t said :S Well, fine, I said I’m not lying, he also says he’s not lying, that’s ok then, let the law of justice decide who the liar!

Oh no…he can’t accept that :p Because he knows he was about to get screwed up easily considering his turbulent past history ;)

Oh yeah, in a village like LEscalier, privacy, specially when u do something wrong, exists no more! From several people, we have received information that this very conductor used to work for the NTC bus service, and was kicked out ;) That’s not all, many usual bus travelers have already got into hard talks with him….But hey wait, this guy’s name is not his!!! The bus company got his brother’s name instead of his on their employees’ list…strange huh? Fortunately the police easily found out about this part! Read the rest of this entry »

When a bus conductor gets sued by me :p

Posted by roushdat on September 17, 2007

Finally, what had to happen, happen, a bus conductor from Perle De La Savanne used an abusive language against me while I was in the bus and with the support of my mum, we went for forward to officially file a complaint against him at the LEscalier Police Station this afternoon ( Monday 17th September 2007 at 5:35pm).

My lecture ended at 3pm and as usual i know that by the time I reach the bus stop, the 3pm bus would have already missed me. And very often, it does not even enter Reduit while en-route from port louis to Lescalier. The next bus bound for lescalier from port Louis does not usually enter Reduit as well. So if you want a Lescalier bus, wait till 4:05pm!

As a convenient solution, I jumped into a Mahebourg-bound bus to get down at Plaine Magnien where I intended to take another bus home. Of course I didn’t have to pay because I was traveling on my way home! Reached Plaine Magnien at around 4:10pm, got a Perle De La Savanne bus some 10 to 15 minutes later. I showed my NTA Pass to him but the latter told me in an insulting way that i had to pay…I insisted politely that the law is such that as long as I’m on my way, I need not pay.I also told him that we should go to the police station to clear his doubts. He refused saying that I will have to pay a big fine in that case (was he frightening me or he got chickened out?), but this didn’t prevent him from using abusive words against me. I am thinking about how not to sink…

Posted by roushdat on September 14, 2007

Well you think that understanding what others say when they say they are ‘thinking’ is easy job? Well think again…

In the clip below, it highlights the difficulty that one may encounter when trying to think about what others are thinking.

Milk series: making your own milk ;)

Posted by roushdat on September 11, 2007

These days there are some problem concerning the availability of powdered-milk in Mauritius and rumors of of an imminent raise in prices for milk!

This problem of milk is not new in this country where most of the milk we have are imported from countries like Australia (dilait twin cow…ki passer la…) ,New Zealand, India (Amoul…like some kind of grass-milk) and the possibility of Chinese milk ( is that coming from cows or people huh?). Anyways, I did propose a solution some time back about owning cows in all families…

But it seems that not every family has sufficient time to look after these nice animals…Like at my place, there are 2 new rooms in which I wanted to keep 12 cows, mum didn’t approve my plan :( If she did…I would have become a very successful cow breeder and provide mauritians with fresh cow milk!

I got another proposal for U: Stop drinking cow milk!!! Drink Rice milk!

Well, we have heard about milk from soya beans…(which i hear taste horrible, I will check it out soon). But rice milk sounds like a good alternative. If you google for recipes you will be amazed about how easy this rice milk is to make at home!

Here’s one simple recipe:

From: Rich Byrnes

  • 2 cups white rice
  • 1 cup (about 4 oz.) blanched almonds
  • 3 Tabl. ground cinnamon
  • 2 qts. warmed milk or hot water
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar, or to taste
  • 1 tea.sp vanilla extract

Ice cubesWash and drain the rice.

In a large bowl, combine the drained rice, almonds, and cinnamon with the warm milk or water and soak at least 6 hours, or preferably overnight.

Drain, reserving liquid.

Pure’e half the rice-almond mixture in a food processor or blender. Add about 1 cup of the reserved liquid and blend until as smooth as possible.

Transfer the blended mixture to a bowl and repeat with the remaining rice mixture and liquid.

Strain the mixture through 3 layers of dampened cheesecloth into a glass pitcher or jar, squeezing the cloth to extract all the milky liquid. Stir in the sugar and vanilla. Chill and serve over ice cubes.

Enjoy your Rice Milk ;)

Botnets : evolution !

Posted by roushdat on September 7, 2007

Last April, I talked a bit about a typical botnet schema ( check it out ).But from what I read today, this botnet thing is evolving!

Some time back, these gang of criminal computers were organised in a centralised way which was their major weakness. All the authorities had to do was to trace back communication from an infected client to the control and command server, then shut the server down. As a result, all other infected clients will be unable to communicate with the server and thus “stop getting criminal orders from the Boss :p”

And as you may have guessed, the next step for the bot herders: decentralisation! They are now moving towards distributed systems whereby infected clients don’t communicate with the boss directly, instead, they have to satisfy themselves through ‘lieutenants’ which act as intermediaries between the boss and the ordinary guyz. And these intermediaries are in quite a big number and are themselves infected systems…in other words, are also victims. So it is already more difficult to reach the control and command server, but that’s only part of the story, there’s more frightening, read this article for more detailed info!
