Glory to thee, Mauritius! Personally, I believe that being a patriot is love for one’s country’s people and not the country only. The country alone is nothing, it is its people that makes up everything. Despite a few rotten minds, mauritian people can set a wonderful example of success. What we have achieved with our limited resources, few others have.
I have been reading several blog posts about the HSC results and also about the famous scholarships that the state awards to the best HSC candidates. And there was some kind of discussion about whether those laureates should have a moral obligation to return back to Mauritius to work for the country or not. Different opinions have been voiced, among the extremes were : Those who don’t come back are traitors/thieves who have stolen tax-payers’ money and the competencies of these big-brains will be under-utilized in Mauritius. Well, everyone has his own way of viewing things but today I wish to talk about something else: CHECK THE TITLE
There are so many people, some still living in Mauritius while others who have already ‘escaped’ to foreign lands who consider themselves as patriots. But the question is: are they really patriots?
Some people act as patriots to gain public attention- they simply adore being in the spotlight.
While few do it for political reasons….i love my country (vote for me)
And we have some people who have been disillusioned about the benefits of migrating but embarrassed to come back home, so they all of a sudden become die-heart patriots. You can put people who try to look for Mauritian groups abroad to mingle with but when in Mauritius, they would have remained in a very closed circle of friends.
The most interesting type of patriot which my friend Selven and I were discussing some days back : The patriot who wants to abandon ship (li faire so demarche soucou soucou, moris p couler sa, nou al rode ailleur). And in public, proudly singing praises for the country :p
We are not here to judge anybody, but my dear people, drop your masks of patriotism unless you can really do something not for the country, but for the benefit of the people living in Mauritius. And if you do this, there is not need to show off that you are a patriot!
Around thee we gather, as one people, one nation and one world.
